FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Data centers

How can you ensure the high availability, security, and efficiency of a data center?

The key lies in the proper design of the topology, critical infrastructure technologies, cooling, power supply, and security, combined with thorough testing of the entire solution. A data center can be designed to meet TIER, TIA-942, or EN 50600 standards and optimized for high availability, scalability, physical and fire safety, and low operating costs.

How does the design and construction of a turnkey data center work?

Data center design and construction covers the entire project lifecycle, from consultation and planning through to construction, commissioning, and integration testing, and finally to handover, assisted operation, service, and maintenance. Altron can act as a general contractor for the data center or as a professional partner to the investor, for example by providing technical supervision and independent commissioning.

How quickly can a modular data center be built?

A prefabricated modular data center can significantly reduce the time required to deploy new IT infrastructure. Altron Modular manufactures and tests modular data centers at its production facility in Buštěhrad, and can deliver its EdgeDC solution in as little as 12 weeks. Some modules can be put into operation within hours of delivery. The portfolio ranges from solutions with 10 kW of ICT power to CoreDC with 4 MW of power and a capacity of up to 500 racks.

Professional Services

What do Professional Services for data centers and critical infrastructure include?

Professional Services include expert support throughout the entire project lifecycle, from business and technical consulting, feasibility studies, and technology audits to design, certification, technical supervision, commissioning, and independent expert assessment. Altron helps design solutions that meet the required technical parameters and standards while optimizing both capital and operational costs.

What is data center commissioning and why is it important?

Commissioning is a systematic process of checking and verifying that a data center or technology infrastructure meets the original design and required parameters. Altron utilizes continuous commissioning from the design phase through construction and integration testing to trial operation. The final phase also includes staff training, documentation handover, and the optimization of technologies and processes for reliable and efficient operation.

Why use independent consultants when designing a data center?

An independent expert perspective helps design a data center based on actual operational and business needs, rather than a specific technology vendor's portfolio. Altron consultants leverage experience from critical infrastructure, detailed calculations, simulations, and risk analyses. The team also includes experts with Uptime Institute Accredited Tier Designer (ATD) and Accredited Tier Specialist (ATS) certifications, as well as specialists with National Security Authority (NBÚ) security clearances.

Energetics

Can backup power sources be used for ancillary services?

Yes. Backup power sources do not have to serve only as a safeguard in the event of an outage. They can be integrated into energy flexibility management systems and used, for example, for mFRR and aFRR balancing energy, demand-response, or flexibility aggregation. Altron helps design these solutions so that, while maintaining the required power security, unused capacity can also generate additional economic benefits.

How can you ensure a reliable power supply for critical infrastructure during a grid outage?

Reliable power for critical infrastructure can be ensured by combining backup and emergency power sources, battery storage systems, local distribution networks, and intelligent control systems. Altron designs energy solutions to ensure that critical technologies can operate safely even during power grid outages, while simultaneously optimizing for operational efficiency and long-term costs.

What is the purpose of BESS battery storage in modern energy systems?

BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) allows for the storage of electrical energy and its controlled use according to the current needs of operations or the power grid. Battery storage can increase energy security, support power management and flexibility, work in tandem with other energy sources, and assist in providing ancillary services. Altron provides the design and installation of BESS as part of comprehensive energy solutions for critical operations.

Service

How does 24/7 service for data centers and critical infrastructure work?

Our 24/7 service provides continuous support for technologies where downtime could have a critical impact on operations. Altron offers a non-stop dispatch center, remote monitoring, preventive maintenance, and emergency service interventions with guaranteed response and resolution times. Our service infrastructure covers approximately 1,200 locations across the Czech Republic.

How does preventive and predictive maintenance help prevent outages?

Preventive and predictive maintenance helps identify risks and potential failures before they cause technology downtime. During service visits, certified Altron technicians perform equipment diagnostics and identify potential weak points. Regular maintenance thus helps reduce the risk of unexpected outages, lower repair costs, and extend the service life of your equipment.

What technologies can Altron service?

Altron provides service for individual devices as well as complex technological systems. The technologies we service include, in particular, UPS systems, battery storage, motor generators, and cooling units. Our services can also include remote monitoring, diagnostics, regular maintenance, emergency repairs, or facility management for critical infrastructure and critical facilities.

Software

How can critical technologies be monitored and managed in real time?

Critical technologies can be continuously monitored using systems that collect data directly from sensors and PLC controllers, evaluating equipment status in real time. The AIMON and ALTRIX systems enable automated anomaly detection, risk alerts, and active technology management. The solution can function as a closed local system or with secure remote access.

How does intelligent monitoring help prevent failures and reduce operating costs?

Intelligent monitoring continuously evaluates operational data, identifies anomalies, and allows you to address potential issues before they cause failures or downtime. At the same time, AIMON and ALTRIX support the optimization of operations and energy consumption, maintenance planning, and more efficient use of technological infrastructure. The result is higher operational reliability, reduced administrative burden, and the ability to lower operating costs.

What can the AIMON and ALTRIX systems do for critical infrastructure management?

AIMON and ALTRIX are not just monitoring systems, but platforms for the comprehensive management of critical technologies. They offer real-time monitoring, automated alerts, incident management, energy management, maintenance management, asset management, dashboards, and notifications. They also allow you to track the lifecycle of equipment, schedule inspections and repairs, manage technical documentation, and perform capacity analyses to prevent outages.

Technological Infrastructure

How can you ensure uninterrupted power and cooling for critical infrastructure?

Reliable operation requires a well-designed combination of redundant power supplies, backup sources, and efficient cooling. Altron utilizes, for example, UPS systems, power centers, BESS battery storage, chillers, cooling towers, row-based and rack-level cooling units, adiabatic cooling, and free-cooling systems. Monitoring critical parameters is also an essential component, allowing for timely responses to emerging issues.

How can you increase the reliability and resilience of critical technological infrastructure?

High reliability can be achieved through a combination of redundancy, modular architecture, fault tolerance, continuous monitoring, and preventive or predictive maintenance. It is essential to address reliability as early as the design phase and subsequently verify it through commissioning and integration testing. Altron also leverages the real-world operational experience of its own service team when designing new critical infrastructure solutions.

What does technological infrastructure for critical operations include?

Technological infrastructure encompasses the systems that ensure the safe and continuous operation of critical technologies. This primarily includes backup and emergency power supplies, UPS systems, power centers, local distribution networks, BESS battery storage, cooling systems, control systems, and monitoring. Altron covers the entire lifecycle of technological infrastructure, from consultation and design through construction and commissioning to service, maintenance, and ongoing monitoring.
